5 Problems and Repairs Common in Diesel Engines
Diesel engines, such as in big rigs, are vastly different from their automotive counterparts. While some of the problems may be similar, quite a few are different enough to make it harder for those who don’t know much about diesel engines to diagnose and fix a problem. Here are some of the more common problems and the causes.

It’s common knowledge that diesel engines give off more smoke through
the exhaust than the typical automobile. But if it’s too much, it’s not
only a problem with the engine but could also result in a hefty fine
depending on the state you are driving in. The cause of this problem is a
fuel ratio imbalance. Generally, more exhaust smoke is caused by too
much air and not enough fuel. It could be a faulty injector, injector
pump, EGR valve air filter, or, in some cases, a turbocharger if one is
installed. That means you’ll need to grab new Caterpillar C15 injectors or other parts, but thankfully the fix is fairly easy in most cases.
Oxidized Oil
If your big rig has been in storage for a season, gets started
infrequently, or has just sat in one place too long, you could do major
damage to your engine. The oil has likely oxidized, with air getting
into the oil and creating air bubbles. This can interfere with proper
lubrication, causing a faltering engine or even engine damage. Luckily
for you, the fix is easy. Replace the oil, and you are good to get back
on the road.
Loss of Power
If you experience a loss of power, such as when starting or
accelerating, you might have another fuel-related problem. You could
also have a problem with the camshaft, but this is rarer than dirty fuel
filters, loose throttle linkage, severe fuel contamination, excess
buildup, excessive lubrication, fuel injector issues, a faulty turbo, or
air getting into the system like with the oxidized oil, above.
Bad Glow Plug
Diesel engines don’t have spark plugs due to the differences between
regular gasoline and diesel. Instead, a glow plug is used, which is a
high-resistance heating element like a stove coil. If the truck won’t
start, especially in cold weather, check on the glow plug and get a
replacement if needed.
Compression Loss
Compression issues generally mean a fairly serious issue with the
engine. It can be caused by leaking and broken valves or piston rings, a
blown head gasket, issues with the camshaft, a broken timing belt, or
even a hole in the piston or cylinder. Determine your engine make and
model, and get a kit like the Caterpillar C15 ACERT Inframe Kit to address these issues before it becomes a catastrophic problem.
